OFFICIAL OPENING AT 12 NOON WITH LIZ HARFULL

South Australian author Liz Harfull is passionate about telling the stories of rural and regional Australia. Her first book The Blue Ribbon Cookbook is a celebration of South Australian country shows and show cooks, including Yankalilla’s own contribution, the late Jill Chinner’s renown Chicken cheesecake recipe. The book capturing the stories of South Australian country shows and the long-standing traditions of their cookery competitions was published by Wakefield Press in September 2008. It is now in its fourth print run and was named runner-up at the Gourmand World Cookbook Awards in Paris in July 2009. The response to the book from around Australia was so remarkable that a national version, The Australian Blue Ribbon Cookbook, was released in March 2014. Just like the first, it celebrates all the things we love about Australian country shows and their big city cousins, bringing together stories, images and, of course, prize-winning recipes. There will be copies of this book available from Liz at the Show. Liz is also author of Women of the LandAllen @ Unwin 2012) and Almost an Island: the Story of Robe (Wakefield Press 2013). An award-winning journalist and Churchill Fellow, she grew up on a small farm near Mount Gambier in South Australia, which has been in the family since the early 1860s. Liz trained as a journalist on a regional newspaper and worked for metropolitan and specialist rural newspapers before spending twelve years with a leading national public relations consultancy specialising in agriculture and environmental management. In 2006 she walked away from being a co-owner/director of thebusinessto focus on her writing and fulfil a childhood ambition. Delicious recipes, heart warming stories and expert cooking tips from prize-winning Australian show cooks. Every year thousands of talented amateurs devote hours to preparing entries for cookery competitions run as part of 600 or so agricultural shows across Australia. In their quest for a prestigious blue ribbon, entrants use recipes based on generations of experience and strict judging codes that demand absolute perfection. In this follow up to the award-winning Blue Ribbon Cookbook, Liz Harfull brings together 70 tried and true recipes from some of the country’s most enthusiastic and talented show cooks. But more than that, in The Australian Blue Ribbon Cookbook Liz shares their heart-warming stories, and the wisdom, knowledge and generosity of spirit that brings success, even for novices. Whether it’s traditional scones or mixed mustard pickle, Jenny’s Jam Drops or Cousin Barb’s Jelly Slice, there is something delicious for everyone to try… The end results may evenwin you a blue ribbon!
